Former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a federal grand jury. Charges are related to mishandling nearly 11,000 classified White House documents. The documents were found in September 2022 at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Trump, front runner of the Republican party 2024, faces at least seven charges which include willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record, corruptly concealing a document or record, concealing a document in a federal investigation, scheme to conceal, and making false statements and representations.
Maximum sentence for the respective charges, is up to years, although any sentence should Trump be convicted would likely be much lower.
Trump indicted for 2nd time
The indictment is Trump’s second since the official end of his presidency. It also marks the first time in history a former president has faced federal charges. In April, he pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts brought by Alvin Bragg, Manhattan District Attorney. The charges related to hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election. The Trump team has denied any wrongdoing.
